John Foster arrived in Gippsland in the 1840. One of the richest men in Tasmania, he died in 1875. His son, Askin Morrison Foster, who built Port Albert's Derwent Hotel, married Elizabeth Ormond, the daughter of Scottish-born philanthropist Francis Ormond, responsible for the establishment of Melbourne University's Ormond College and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
